Is It Detox… or a Herx Reaction? How to Tell the Difference- July 24, 2025

Think your detox is working just because you feel awful? Not so fast. A Herxheimer reaction means your body’s overloaded with toxins it can’t eliminate. Learn how to tell the difference between detox and disaster and what to do when drainage is the missing step.

Is It Detox… or a Herx Reaction? How to Tell the Difference- July 24, 2025
Feeling worse after a detox? It might not be healing—it might be a Herx. Learn the signs and how to fix it fast with drainage support

You started that parasite cleanse. Or maybe a liver detox.
And now suddenly you feel like roadkill.
Head pounding. Gut in knots. Mood shot. Energy in the toilet.

You’re googling things like “detox made me feel worse” or “why do I feel sick on a parasite cleanse.”
Let’s break down what’s happening because there’s a big difference between healing and harming.

Sound familiar?

Let’s talk about the difference between a normal detox reaction and a Herxheimer reaction because they are not the same thing.

What Is a Herx Reaction?

A Herxheimer reaction (aka a Herx or die-off reaction) happens when your body gets hit with more toxins than it can handle. It’s not healing, it’s an inflammatory crash. Most people mistake it for “detox,” but it’s actually your drainage system throwing up the white flag.

It usually follows antimicrobial treatment like parasite cleanses, mold protocols, or certain herbs and supplements, and triggers a wave of inflammation, not progress.

Symptoms of a Herxheimer Reaction vs a Normal Detox Response

SymptomDetox (Normal)Herx (Overload)
Duration1–2 daysLasts for days or intensifies
EnergyImproves over timeCrashes hard
MoodCalmer, clearerIrritable, anxious, weepy
GutSlight gurgling or shiftPain, diarrhea, severe bloating
SkinMild breakout, then glowRashes, hives, persistent itching
SleepMay improveInsomnia, wired-tired

Why Does This Happen?

When you kill off pathogens like parasites, mold, or bacteria, they don’t go quietly. They release a nasty mix of internal garbage that your body now has to deal with, including:

  • Endotoxins (toxic fragments from bacterial die-off)
  • Mycotoxins (waste from mold)
  • Ammonia (a gut byproduct that irritates the brain and liver)
  • Heavy metals
  • Cell debris and inflammatory compounds

If your drainage pathways aren’t open, these toxins don’t leave your body—they recirculate. That’s when things go sideways. Your body isn’t healing. It’s inflamed. And that’s not detox… that’s drowning in your own trash.

This isn’t detox. This is recirculation!

💡 What to Do If You’re Having a Herx

1. Pause the Protocol

Stop antimicrobials or detox agents temporarily
You’re not quitting you’re just giving your body a break.

2. Double Down on Drainage

  • Poop at least once daily (use magnesium or enemas if needed)
  • Use castor oil packs over liver + belly
  • Add lymph support (dry brushing, walking, sauna)
  • Hydrate with electrolytes or BEAM Minerals

3. Add a Binder

Binders “mop up” toxins so they don’t recirculate. Try:

  • Activated charcoal
  • Bentonite clay
  • Zeolite
  • Biotoxin binders

Tip: Take binders away from supplements and food (1-2 hours apart)

4. Sweat + Breathe It Out

  • Epsom salt baths
  • Infrared sauna
  • Deep nasal breathing + breathwork

5. Support Your Nervous System

  • Get outside barefoot
  • Use calming herbs (lemon balm, L-theanine, magnesium glycinate)
  • Breathwork, prayer, music, or naps, all count

💡 Reminder: You’re not failing. You’re learning. Your body isn’t weak. It’s overwhelmed.
