Castor Oil Packs: Weird, Messy, and Totally Worth It June 23, 2025

I know what you’re thinking: “You want me to put oil on flannel, wrap it on my belly, and sit there for an hour?”
Yes. Yes, I do. And your liver will thank you.
Why Everyone’s Suddenly Talking About Castor Oil Packs Again
Castor oil packs are one of those old-school remedies your great-grandma swore by and she was onto something.
They’re messy. They’re weird. And they work.
Used traditionally to support lymphatic flow, liver drainage, hormone balance, and even constipation, castor oil packs are finally having their comeback moment.
And for good reason.
What the Heck Do Castor Oil Packs Actually Do?
Castor oil is packed with ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that:
- Stimulates the lymphatic system
- Promotes circulation and bile flow
- Calms inflammation
- Supports hormone metabolism
When applied topically over your liver or abdomen, it acts like a natural drainage stimulator, pulling toxins from the tissues underneath and helping your body move the junk out.
It’s like giving your detox organs a hot oil massage.
How to Do a Castor Oil Pack (The Less Messy Way)
You can go old-school DIY or grab a clean, reusable wrap online (I’ll link my fav below).
Here's what you need:
- Organic, cold-pressed castor oil
- A flannel cloth or cotton pad
- A wrap (or plastic wrap + towel)
- A hot water bottle or heating pad (optional but heavenly)
Steps:
- Pour your castor oi onto the pack (but don’t drench it)
- Place it over your liver (upper right abdomen) or lower belly
- Cover with wrap or towel
- Lie down and chill for 30–60 minutes
- Wipe off any excess oil with a warm cloth
You can reuse the cloth for about a week. Just keep it in a jar or bag in the fridge.
When (and Why) to Use Them
Castor oil packs can be used:
- During detox protocols to support drainage
- During your cycle for hormone and period relief
- Before bed to calm the nervous system
- Any time your digestion feels stuck, your lymph feels sluggish, or your mood is funky
They’re gentle enough to use daily but even 3x/week makes a huge difference.
Things to Watch For
Castor oil packs are incredibly safe for most people but avoid if:
- You’re pregnant (ask your doc)
- You have a known castor oil allergy (rare, but possible)
- You’re doing it right before a big event… because sometimes, things move

- Castor oil packs support drainage, detox, hormones, and calm
- They’re easy, inexpensive, and surprisingly powerful
- Don’t knock it ‘til your liver’s had a little love
- You can do them anytime especially before a detox protocol
